4.CS.HS.01 Model that information is translated, transmitted, and processed in order to flow through hardware and software.

In a Nutshell

Students will model the flow of information from hardware to software as it is sending, receiving, processing, and storing information.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Identify the components of a computing system, including hardware and software.

  •  Explain how information is translated from one form to another.

  • Describe the process of information transmission (sending and receiving data).

  • Explain how information is processed, including the roles of hardware and software.

  • Facilitate student conversations about the flow of information from computers sending and receiving, storing, and processing information, and provide visual aids of the flow of information.

  • Demonstrate different types of input(mouse, keyboard, touch screen) that lead to different outputs(Screen, printing, speakers).

  • Ask leading questions about input, output, and the process that information travels through hardware and software:

    • What input would you use to get to your desired outcome?

    • Could the input of your information cause multiple outcomes? How?

    • Where will this information be stored?

Key Concepts

Misconceptions

  • There is a flow of information that happens through the use of hardware and software in a computing system.

  • Hardware and software work independently of each other.
